About Guitars

There are three main types of modern guitar: the classical guitar (Spanish guitar/nylon-string guitar); the steel-string acoustic guitar or electric guitar; and the Hawaiian guitar (played across the player’s lap). Traditional acoustic guitars include the flat top guitar (typically with a large sound hole) or an archtop guitar, which is sometimes called a “jazz guitar“. The tone of an acoustic guitar is produced by the strings’ vibration, amplified by the hollow body of the guitar, which acts as a resonating chamber. The classical Spanish guitar is often played as a solo instrument using a comprehensive fingerstyle technique where each string is plucked individually by the player’s fingers, as opposed to being strummed. The term “finger-picking” can also refer to a specific tradition of folk, blues, bluegrass, and country guitar playing in the United States.

What Do You Learn in Guitar Lessons?

Beginner students, ages 4 and up, will learn chords, simple songs, melodies. Along with sight-reading, and theory in their guitar lessons. Guitar lessons for intermediate and advanced students will focus on scales, dexterity, and dynamics. All while learning to play the songs you love. Because we balance musicianship and fun by making sure that at each lesson you are challenged. Resulting in a new technical or theory concept. Lastly, we always end the guitar lesson with something fun, like your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of guitar method books to accomplish this. We encourage you to bring your devices to your guitar lesson.

What Happens at the First Guitar Lesson?

Prospective guitar students often ask that question. Firstly, our guitar teachers will get to know you on a personal level to become familiar with your musical goals. Secondly, we do not treat every guitar student the same. For instance, a 9 year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a 57 year old taking up guitar for the second time after having had guitar lessons as a child.
